About Us

Who We Are

As a catalyst for change in the African region, we advocate for sustainable construction policies, drive research and development, and create replicable models of green architecture. Through collaboration and innovation, we strive to shape a future where buildings are not just structures but solutions—designed to support both people and the planet.

Vision

To be a leading organisation in the African region, pioneering sustainable building practices that balance ecological integrity with architectural innovation, we aim to become a reference point for sustainable development in the built environment.

Mission

Our mission is to harmonise the natural and built environments by advancing sustainable building practices through advocacy, research, and collaboration, ensuring that future constructions are environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable.

Objectives

  1. Conduct research and development to create innovative, sustainable building designs.
  2. Establish benchmarks and case studies for African region.
  3. Partner with local, regional, and international stakeholders to promote sustainable
    building practices.
  4. Educate and raise awareness among the public, professionals, and policymakers on the
    importance of sustainable design.
  5. Advocate for the integration of sustainable building practices in national and regional
    policies.

Background

The world faces a global environmental challenge, leading to environmental degradation and biodiversity loss. The construction industry is one of the most significant contributors to resource depletion and carbon emissions. In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which would serve as the blueprint for development towards a more sustainable planet, and countries from around the world pledged to set targets to achieve these goals. Consequently, some of the goals have a direct impact on the natural environment, such as SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable; SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; and SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial
ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss.

Developing countries are usually the most affected by climate change’s effects but are minor contributors. This creates a unique opportunity for developing countries because they can learn from developed nations and avoid destructive practices. It also makes developing countries more resilient to the adverse effects of climate change because they will actively prepare for it. In the African region, there is a need to examine the relationship between the natural environment and the built environment. Many building practices need to be more sustainable and consider long-term environmental impacts.

Recognising this gap, the organisation seeks to align itself with environmental sustainability goals. Thus, it aims to promote sustainable building practices that are environmentally responsible, economically viable, and culturally appropriate. By merging the natural and built environments, the organisation will act as a catalyst for change in the African region, advocating for sustainable construction policies, conducting research and development, and creating replicable models of green architecture.
